A materials scientist, artist, and poet living in Salt Lake City. My work follows a thread, structure, through both materials and meaning: from crystal lattices and high-throughput materials discovery to poetry, sound, and visual art.
Current Work
- Periodic Graph Metamaterials Atlas (Aux-Mat). An atlas of the mechanical and dynamical behavior of textile metamaterials, lattices drawn from lace and weave. aux-mat.org
- A Structure of Harmonic Relations. A theory of harmony as movement through the Stern–Brocot tree of all rationals, with the interactive Consonance Tree as its companion. r-h-taylor.github.io/consonance-tree
- Materials Engineering: A Narrative Pedagogy. A scholarly edition of Thomas W. Eagar’s recorded MIT teaching (1949–2022): 215 lectures and 1,949 cases, full-text searchable. r-h-taylor.github.io
Artistic Interests
- Materiality. The substance of a work as its first argument; the meaning and implications of material.
- The structure and symbolic in music. Harmony and structure as carriers of conceptual meaning, where consonance and its absence frame the musical object.
- The tactile. Touch and the made surface; the evidence of the hand.
- Color. Treated as concept and symbol rather than description or decorative.
- Ambiguity as artistic pre-condition. Art typology and aesthetic theory defined by the ambiguity-creating framework.
